OSFED & Atypical Anorexia Nervosa
Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED) is a recognised eating disorder diagnosis used when a person experiences clinically significant eating disorder symptoms that do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for another specific eating disorder, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder.
One common presentation is atypical anorexia nervosa, where an individual experiences the psychological and behavioural features of anorexia nervosa, including significant dietary restriction and fear of weight gain, but their weight remains within or above the expected range despite substantial weight loss. Atypical anorexia nervosa can involve serious medical complications and psychological distress, regardless of body weight.
At Coral Coast Eating Disorder Service (CCEDS), we provide evidence-based assessment and treatment for OSFED and atypical anorexia nervosa in children, adolescents and adults in Bundaberg, Queensland, with Telehealth appointments available Australia-wide.
Our multidisciplinary approach combines specialist dietetic treatment with psychological therapies, including Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT-E), FBT and SSCM where appropriate. Treatment focuses on nutritional rehabilitation, addressing restrictive eating and other eating disorder behaviours, improving psychological wellbeing and supporting sustainable recovery.

Our approach to OSFED and Atypical Anorexia Nervosa treatment
At Coral Coast Eating Disorder Service, we recognise that Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED) encompasses a range of clinically significant eating disorder presentations. These include atypical anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa of low frequency or limited duration, binge eating disorder of low frequency or limited duration, purging disorder and night eating syndrome.
Although individuals with OSFED may not meet the full diagnostic criteria for another eating disorder, their symptoms can cause substantial psychological distress, nutritional compromise and medical complications. The severity of an eating disorder cannot be determined by body weight or diagnostic classification alone.
Our treatment approach is individualised according to each person’s eating disorder presentation, nutritional needs, psychological difficulties and medical risk.
For individuals experiencing atypical anorexia nervosa, treatment may involve nutritional rehabilitation, addressing restrictive eating and supporting recovery from the physical and psychological consequences of significant weight loss, regardless of current body weight.
Dietetic Treatment
Dietetic treatment for OSFED is tailored to the individual’s eating disorder presentation, nutritional needs and recovery goals. Treatment focuses on restoring nutritional adequacy, establishing regular and flexible eating patterns, and addressing dietary restriction, food-related anxiety and other behaviours that maintain the eating disorder.
For individuals experiencing atypical anorexia nervosa, nutritional rehabilitation may be necessary even when body weight is within or above the expected range. Significant weight loss, prolonged dietary restriction and inadequate energy intake can result in medical instability and nutritional compromise regardless of BMI. Nutritional rehabilitation is therefore guided by individual clinical assessment, weight history, physical health and psychological needs rather than BMI alone.
Treatment may include challenging rigid food rules, reducing avoidance of feared foods, addressing binge eating or compensatory behaviours where present, and supporting the gradual restoration of hunger and fullness awareness.
We work collaboratively with individuals to develop sustainable eating patterns, improve nutritional wellbeing and establish a more flexible and supportive relationship with food. Treatment is individualised, recognising that nutritional recovery needs differ across OSFED presentations.
Psychological Treatment
Psychological treatment for OSFED focuses on identifying and addressing the thoughts, emotions and behaviours that contribute to the development and maintenance of eating disorder symptoms. Treatment is individualised according to the person’s clinical presentation, psychological needs and recovery goals.
At Coral Coast Eating Disorder Service, both our dietitian and clinical psychologist are trained in Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT-E), an evidence-based treatment for eating disorders. CBT-E addresses the psychological processes that maintain eating disorder behaviours, including dietary restraint, concerns about body shape and weight, rigid food rules and difficulties with emotional regulation. Other approaches including FBT and SSCM are also available where indicated.
For individuals experiencing atypical anorexia nervosa, psychological treatment may focus on reducing fear of weight gain, addressing body image concerns, challenging restrictive eating behaviours and supporting the psychological adjustments associated with nutritional rehabilitation.
For other OSFED presentations, treatment may address binge eating, compensatory behaviours, food-related anxiety and other difficulties contributing to the eating disorder.
Our approach integrates psychological and nutritional treatment, supporting individuals to develop more flexible thinking patterns, reduce eating disorder symptoms and improve their overall psychological wellbeing.
Medical Monitoring and Collaborative Care
Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED), including atypical anorexia nervosa, can be associated with significant medical complications. These may occur regardless of body weight and can include cardiovascular instability, electrolyte disturbances, dehydration, nutritional deficiencies and complications associated with prolonged dietary restriction or compensatory behaviours.
Individuals experiencing atypical anorexia nervosa may develop serious medical complications following substantial or rapid weight loss, even when their BMI remains within or above the expected range. Medical risk must therefore be assessed using a comprehensive clinical evaluation rather than body weight alone.
At Coral Coast Eating Disorder Service, we work collaboratively with general practitioners, psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals to support appropriate medical assessment, monitoring and coordinated care throughout treatment.
Depending on individual clinical needs, medical monitoring may include assessment of cardiovascular function, blood pressure, heart rate, electrolyte levels and other indicators of nutritional or medical compromise. Individuals undergoing nutritional rehabilitation may also require monitoring for refeeding complications.
Our approach integrates specialist dietetic treatment, psychological care and appropriate medical oversight to support safe nutritional rehabilitation and recovery.
Supporting Long-Term Recovery
Recovery from OSFED and atypical anorexia nervosa involves more than reducing eating disorder behaviours. It includes restoring nutritional wellbeing, developing a more flexible relationship with food, addressing psychological difficulties and reducing the impact of the eating disorder on everyday life.
At Coral Coast Eating Disorder Service, we recognise that recovery is individual and that treatment needs vary across different OSFED presentations. We work collaboratively with each person to establish meaningful recovery goals, build confidence around eating and develop strategies for managing challenges throughout treatment.
For individuals recovering from atypical anorexia nervosa, ongoing support may involve maintaining nutritional rehabilitation, addressing persistent fears around food and weight, improving body image and supporting the psychological adjustments associated with recovery.
Relapse prevention is an important component of our approach. As treatment progresses, we help individuals recognise early warning signs, develop strategies for managing setbacks and strengthen the skills needed to maintain recovery.
Our goal is to support sustainable improvements in nutritional health, psychological wellbeing and quality of life through compassionate, evidence-based and individualised care.
