Binge Eating Disorder

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is an eating disorder characterised by recurrent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food, accompanied by a sense of loss of control. These episodes are often associated with significant distress, shame or guilt.

At Coral Coast Eating Disorder Service (CCEDS), we provide evidence-based assessment and treatment for Binge Eating Disorder in Bundaberg, Queensland, with Telehealth appointments available Australia-wide.

Our multidisciplinary approach combines specialist dietetic care with psychological treatment, including Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT-E), where appropriate. Treatment focuses on reducing binge eating, establishing regular and adequate eating patterns, addressing unhelpful beliefs about food and body image, and supporting long-term recovery.

Our approach to Binge Eating Disorder treatment

At Coral Coast Eating Disorder Service, we recognise that Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a complex mental health condition, not simply a problem of willpower or self-control. Effective treatment involves understanding the psychological, behavioural and nutritional factors contributing to binge eating.

Our multidisciplinary approach combines evidence-based dietetic treatment with psychological therapies, including Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT-E), where appropriate. Treatment is individualised to each person’s needs, experiences and recovery goals.

Dietetic Treatment

Dietetic treatment focuses on developing a more consistent, flexible and supportive relationship with food. This may include establishing regular and adequate eating patterns, reducing dietary restriction, addressing food rules and challenging beliefs about food, eating and body weight.

We also explore the relationship between emotional experiences, hunger and fullness cues, and eating behaviours, helping individuals develop greater confidence in responding to their nutritional and physical needs.

Psychological Treatment

Psychological treatment, including CBT-E, addresses the thoughts, emotions and behavioural patterns that maintain binge eating. This may involve working with concerns about body shape and weight, reducing unhelpful dietary restraint, developing alternative coping strategies and addressing the distress associated with binge eating episodes.

Supporting Long-Term Recovery

Recovery from BED involves more than reducing binge eating episodes. Our approach supports improved psychological wellbeing, reduced food-related distress, greater eating flexibility and a more compassionate relationship with food and body image.

Treatment is provided without judgement or an assumption that weight loss is necessary for recovery.
